  • The Beginning

Well. I guess this is the start of something that could be grand, or it could be boring–it could last for decades, or it could fizzle out in a few weeks.

Perseverance isn’t in my genes. I’m not built to stick with something for a prolonged period of time. I started reading Russell Baker’s memoir, Growing Up, in January of last year, and I absolutely loved it. I blazed through the first 200 out of 276 pages at a breakneck pace, then, on the 3rd of January, I took a breather. Placed it on my cheap, black dining room table–or, kitchen table, rather, for I’m not in the correct income bracket to have a whole room dedicated entirely to eating my meals (instant noodles)–where it developed a fine layer of dust. I did not pick the book up again until 3 whole months later in April. When I finally returned to it, I finished the thing in one day.

I just can’t stick with things. I did finish it in the end, though. Is this my body’s form of perseverance, inconsistent & unsustained bursts of effort & interest?

I’ll try this time with this blog, though. I’ll really try. I’ll be a normal human who sticks with the things he likes.

Anyhow, you’re probably wondering what the purpose of this blog is. I’m wondering the same thing. My main plan right now is to use this blog as a space to talk about my interests–economic history, economics as a whole, the internet, books & writing, and international politics & news. (Though, if you’re looking for insightful political commentary, this isn’t the place for you. I’ll likely just be giving shallow, knee jerk reactions appropriate for a young, idealistic student at a very liberal university).

If that sounds interesting, pull up a chair. Stick around. And try not to laugh too hard when I inevitably trip and fall on my face.
